The Use of Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) in the Diet of Dry Cows and its Impact on Postpartum Metabolic Disease.
By: Jose Salazar, Luis Solis, Emilio Olivares and Erasmo Gutierrez.

Summary
The balance of Anions and Cations in the Diet (BACD) is a functional expression describing the chemical balance of the main anions and canions in diet and it is expressed by the following equation BACD = [(Na+ + K+) ? ( Cl- + S2-)] in meq/100 g of dry matter (MS). Different researchers have concluded that when handling a BACD(-) for dry cows or in cows who are ready for to give birth, the incidence of postpartum illnesses decreases considerably.

The experiment consisted of two treatments, BACD of +21.1 and ?3.0 meq/100 g MS, with 10 cows under treatment; for handling a BACD(-) treatment, anionic salt CaCl2 was used since this has reported the best results in the literature consulted. Cows which consumed BACD(-) increased milk production by 6.3%, during the first 28 days of lactation during the test, in comparison to cows in the control group (BACD(+)).

In addition, BACD(-) accentuated sub-acute metabolic acidosis during birthing and the absorption of Calcium was significantly improved as well as the physical health of the animal.
